Volunteer Sunday
“Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.” - Galatians 6:2
Dear Beloved in Christ,
The Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America has blessed the last Sunday of January as Volunteer Sunday, raising awareness about Christ’s call for all faithful to offer their talents to His holy church by volunteering to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, and comfort the sick and imprisoned (Matthew 25:34-46). Orthodox Volunteer Corps (OVC), an Agency of the Assembly of Bishops, was created to respond to the Lord’s call to bear the burdens of those who are suffering through volunteerism.
Saint Peter reminds us that God has bestowed gifts on each of us and called us to use those gifts in service to one another, "each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10).
As parish communities, we have a beautiful opportunity to recognize the unique gifts of each member and come together in service to those in need beyond our Church walls. Let us embrace today as an opportunity for each of us to consider the gifts we have to offer and how we might share them.
In Christ,
Bishop Andrei
Episcopal Liaison to Orthodox Volunteer Corps
