George N. Boulukos has been honored with the prestigious Silver Buffalo Award by the Boy Scouts of America. For decades Boulukos led the Eastern Orthodox Commission on Scouting (EOCS). The award is the highest commendation given by the Boy Scouts of America in recognition of the invaluable contributions that outstanding Americans make to youth.
Boulukos has been a lifelong Boy Scout, working tirelessly to promote the goals and objectives of the Boy Scouts of America. He was born and raised in Merrick, NY, and resides with his family in Freeport, NY. He has served the Boy Scout program on many levels, working within his community and throughout the United States on district, national, and international programs and activities. In recognition of his sixty years of service, the National Court of Honor and the National Executive Board selected him to receive the Silver Buffalo Award for all he has done for Scouting and the youth of America.
The Award was presented at the recent National Annual Meeting, held in Grapevine, Texas, in appreciation for his years of exceptional service to youth. It is the culmination of many other awards that Boulukos has received over the years, including the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award and the Silver Antelope.
Created in 1925, the first Silver Buffalo Award was conferred upon Lord Robert Baden-Power, founder of the Scouting Movements and Chief Scout of the World. Some other well known recipients include Charles A. Lindbergh, John Glenn, Neil Armstrong, Norman Rockwell, Charles M. Schultz, Walt Disney, Hank Aaron, Vince Lombardi, Yogi Berra, Bob Hope, Marian Anderson, Irving Berlin, Art Linkletter, General Colin L. Powell, Bill Gates, and 14 presidents of the United States.
Mr. Boulukos is the first Orthodox Christian to receive this prestigious award. He has been Chairman of the Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting, which includes all the Orthodox units in the United States. He is co-founder of Desmos, which is the international organization of Eastern Orthodox Christian Scouts. His love of scouting and his dedication makes one readily say “Axios!”or “Worthy!”
