Integration of Faith The hallmark of PTSD and complex trauma is loss of connection to self, in service of protecting us from overwhelming, destabilizing emotions. That loss in turn leads to disconnection from others, and from God. So the healing of trauma, at its core, is the clearing of obstacles to our relationship with God. To effectively treat trauma, we must be willing and able to accompany our patients on their journey toward spiritual connection and meaning-making. I work equally effectively with those for whom this spiritual journey is explicit and intentional, and those for whom it is implicit and perhaps not conscious. Likewise, I equally accommodate those who lean in to faith consistently as well as those who live more regularly on the edge of doubt.
