Integration of Faith | I believe that the proper place of integration between Orthodox faith and clinical practice is my own life. That means, first of all, a life in the Church that includes ascetical struggle and lithurgical presence. My current private patients, with all of whom I work in psychodynamic psychotherapy, are not Orthodox Christians. Yet, some of them are Christians of other denominations. With them, the active presence of faith is the most palpable. Sometimes, faith comes in the foreground and we talk about it. Most of the time, it is the silent, yet powerful background that holds and mystically directs the therapeutic encounter through the invisible presence of the Lord, and the intercession of the Holy Theotokos and of the Saints. Finding a bridge between the Orthodox faith and the practice of psychotherapy is also a major academic concern of mine (which is of secondary importance, but important nevertheless). |
