IOCC Issues Emergency Appeal for Middle East Crisis

International Orthodox Christian Charities is issuing an Emergency Appeal for the Middle East, with a goal of raising $500,000 for its initial response to the dire and deteriorating situation.

Two OCMC Teams commissioned by His Eminence, Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta

OCMC short-term Orthodox Mission Teams offer multiple ways for Orthodox Christians to share their time and talents with Orthodox communities around the world. That was evident as two teams, one to Romania and one to Guatemala, converged for orientation at Marywood Retreat Center, near St. Augustine, as they prepared to serve on the respective trips.

Health Crisis in Zimbabwe Spotlighted Through $1.5 Million Gift of Critically Needed Medicines and Medical Equipment

Skyrocketing inflation and deteriorating social conditions have made it impossible for hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans to receive adequate medical care. International Orthodox Christian Charities’ recent $1.5 million shipment of hospital supplies, medical equipment and critically-needed medicines will begin to address this critical need. The shipment to Zimbabwe also represents IOCC’s expansion of its Gift in Kind outreach and activities in Africa.

Orthodox-Catholic Theological Consultation Meets in Brookline

The North American Orthodox-Catholic Theological Consultation held its 70th meeting at Hellenic College/Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts, from June 5 to 7, 2006. The meeting was co-chaired by Metropolitan Maximos of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh and Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk of Cincinnati.

Orthodox and Catholic Bishops Convene in Washington, DC

The Joint Committee of Orthodox and Catholic Bishops held its 22nd meeting at Saint Paul’s College in Washington, DC, from June 21 to 23. It was co-chaired by Archbishop Oscar Lipscomb of Mobile and Bishop Seraphim of Ottawa and Canada (Orthodox Church in America). Plans had been made for the twenty-second meeting to take place in October 2005 in Syria as a guest of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church, but for technical reasons this was not possible.

Come Receive the Light is Now the Most Far Reaching Weekly Media Witness for the Orthodox Christian Churches

Come Receive the Light, the National Orthodox Christian Radio Program is pleased to announce they have reached a new milestone. The program is now ministering to listeners in over 80 cities throughout America. With the addition of the newest radio affiliate airing the weekly Orthodox radio program in South Florida, Come Receive The Light, produced by SCOBA agency Orthodox Christian Network (OCN), is now the most far reaching weekly media witness for the Church here in the United States.

OCMC's SAMP Program: 20 Years of Making a Difference

Twenty years ago, the Orthodox Christian Mission Center’s Board of Directors had an idea to support indigenous Orthodox priests in extremely poor areas around the world with funding from parishes and individuals in the United States. In 1985, one of the founders of the SAMP program stated “Our goal is to find enough sponsors each year so that we can offer this minimal help to indigenous Orthodox priests.” With that, the OCMC’s Support A Mission Priest (SAMP) program was born.

Since December 2004, the Hoppe Family has been in the United States as Lynette received treatments for her stage 4 breast cancer. On May 18 th , 2006 the family returned to Albania to resume their ministries. They hope to stay as long as Lynette’s strength continues. A Banner Year for OCMC’s 2006 Mission Teams !!

This year the Mission Center successfully approved over 122 team members, the most ever , who will teach, build, baptize, nurture and heal in Orthodox communities around the world. Ten are seminarians from schools like Holy Cross, St. Vladimir’s, St. Tikhon’s and St. Herman’s while others come from various churches throughout the United States . What makes this year so incredible is the amount of people that have been invigorated to participate in mission teams such as eleven members from St. Barnabas Church in Huntington Beach , California , eight from Annunciation Cathedral in Baltimore , Maryland and six from Holy Trinity Church in St. Augustine , Florida .

The OCF Effect

OCF affects thousands of students each year. How has OCF affected you? For parents, it could be the piece of mind that the Church has not forgotten their son or daughter, so their son or daughter will not forget the Church. For students the effect could be the weekly bible study or a ride to church, for others it is the place called home on campus or just the opportunity to share a slice of pizza with other Christian students. No matter what your answer is, OCF has probably affected you or someone you know in a positive way this past school year.

Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF) held its first-ever Chaplains Conference for clergy and lay leaders May 2-4, 2006 at the Antiochian Village Conference Center in Ligonier, PA. This fantastic retreat brought together twenty clergy and lay OCF chaplains from throughout North America.

The recent earthquake in Indonesia and the beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season serve as powerful reminders of the ongoing need for disaster preparedness and donated “Gift of the Heart” kits. “The availability of essential supplies following a disaster can be a lifeline for survivors,” said IOCC executive director Constantine M. Triantafilou. “The ‘Gift of the Heart’ kits contributed by Orthodox Christians have made a vital contribution to the well being of tens of thousands of people around the world.”

IOCC Assistance Continues In Disaster Areas of South Asia and U.S.

In South Asia, Indonesia and Thailand are the focus of IOCC projects to assist in areas most severely affected by the December 2004 tsunami. IOCC is providing nearly $3 million in assistance to the two countries through projects focused on reconstruction, health, education and vocational training for young people.

His Grace DIMITRIOS of Xanthos officiates at the Groundbreaking Ceremonies for OCMC's Missionary Training and Administrative Support Center

On May 5th, 2006, the groundbreaking ceremonies of OCMC’s Missionary Training and Administrative Support Center were conducted by His Grace DIMITRIOS of Xanthos, General Secretary of the Standing Conference of the Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas (SCOBA). The day started with an overcast sky, but, as the groundbreaking services began, the sun shone brightly. Faithful from Orthodox communities throughout the country, together with local dignitaries, OCMC benefactors, board members, staff, and missionaries, joined to mark this historic day.

Major Issues Dominate Proceedings of SCOBA

Several major issues were discussed at length yesterday during the meeting of the Standing Conference of the Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas (SCOBA) being held in Chicago. These included: Issues in Coordinating and Establishing New and Mission Parishes, Sexual Misconduct in the Church, Keeping Young People Connected to the Church and the State of the Diaconate.

Major Donation Given to Orthodox Christian Network

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Leon have donated $100,000 to OCN for the specific purpose of giving the media ministry of OCN the freedom to continue seeking the funding necessary to create a truly national media witness for Orthodox Christianity in this country.
